The One Thing All Great Teachers Do | Nick Fuhrman | TEDxUGA

With this talk, Dr. Nick Fuhrman encourages us to recognize the profound personal impact that we can have on others - both in and out of the classroom. Dr. Nick Fuhrman is an associate professor of environmental education in the Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication. Also known as “Ranger Nick,” he teaches graduate courses in educational program development and data analysis and undergraduate courses in environmental education and teaching methods. Dr. Fuhrman received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Forestry from Virginia Tech and his PhD in Agricultural Education and Communication from the University of Florida. His life’s passion is teaching, and he often uses live animals (such as snakes, turtles, and owls) in the classroom and on his monthly television series, Ranger Nick. Dr. Fuhrman and his wife, Jessica, have a son, Miles, who already seems to love animals and the outdoors as much as his dad. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I have a rule in my kindergarten class at church: if you are wearing socks no running in the room because you will slip on the fake wood floor. One day I forgot I was wearing socks not barefoot and was running around, needless to say I slipped and banged myself up pretty good. After I recovered I turned it around and said “this is why we don’t run in our socks.” A perfect teachable moment lol

Everyone is right about the main point but teachers need to develop that charisma to charm kids and teens. So many teachers I worked with were just good at being bitches and scarying kids into doing stuff they hated. But a great teacher uses everything from their voice, posture, humor and personal space, all the way through to the resources they buy out of their post-tax pay to charm people into seeing the wonder of the universe. That is a unique skill. Sort of a magician in a classroom.

Dr. Fuhrman, your talk made me remember just WHY I became a teacher...to show kids that someone cares and believes in them. I'm starting to use stickers on sticky notes writing encouraging statements to individual students each day. I have almost 150 kiddos and I can't do them all at once, but my goal is to get one to every student by the end of the year. Received heartfelt "thanks" from 2 8th graders who received theirs today. Made this 30 year veteran teacher's eyes well up with tears, seeing their reaction to receiving their note.

I think it is important to build good bonds with your students. When I first started working for the program it was new to me how to get to know each and every student. And I allowed for my students to get to know me by telling them a little about myself. And also know a little bit about each as well. As time progressed we all got close because we spent every evening after school together. There were times where my girls would be shredding a couple tears and I wouldn’t know why. Of course I would pull them to the side to ask them what’s wrong and have a little conversation. I would always let my students know they can always talk to me about anything. Weather it’s something that may be happening with their friends. Or just about how they are feeling. To let them know that I care about how they are doing. Now something I like to do with my students is after snack we would get in a group before doing some laps and ask everyone how they are feeling and how has their day been. And even if some would respond not good or not so good. I would tell them hopefully our time all together in the program would make it slightly better for them.

Ranger Nick, Thank you for the great Ted Talk. As I've grown into the twilight of my teaching career, I am always, as you say, evaluating myself, and PD these days can often be focused on many of the things that DON'T make a good teacher. Talks like these inspire and motivate me though, and I can so relate to your story and subject matter. As a 23+ veteran 8th grade science teacher, I too was inspired to teach/coach from a young age of 15 when I had my own youth hockey team to coach. I've never wanted to do anything else. And, as a science teacher, I have many reptile friends in my classroom, including a corn snake. Animals break barriers with teenagers and always gets their attention, they also seems to magically overcome generational divides and cell phones. Thanks for the inspiration! I'll remember to CARE!

There is one right way back home, only one Name to get saved- Jesus. He is the real (Word of) God, there is only one Spirit of the everlasting love- it is Christ, who loves unconditionally . Everybody can meet Him and understand, how He really is. He tells the truth directly to everyone, who is searching for Him from the bottom of the heart. Jesus Christ is so much different than they wrote and talk about Him in this world. He is so much better than the people think. There is no other God's Name, no other Spirit, nobody who can tell the truth about Him- I mean everyone who hasn' t met Him or doesn't hear His voice. When somebody talks about things, which were written, he becomes a witness of a scripture, not of Jesus Christ. This world is not His Kingdom, that's why it is full of lies, which the people called "truth". Call His holy Name, He always answers when all we want is Him and His truth.. If you belive in Jesus Christ, let somebody babtise you in His Name... Ask honest and let the Holy Spirit fill you and you can listen to the Word of GOD in your heart. . GOD will let you know that you are saved and born again. And then... Will you be searching for Him somewhere else or by someone else, when He will live inside of you? The bible is not the true Word of God, there are two different gospels of this book- about the "lord" of this world (flesh) and the second one about Jesus Christ, The Revealed God, who became a human to save us.. We can be (spirituallly) born again now as the children of the only true Father (The Holy Ghost). If you (still) want to read this book, please remember- always ask the Holy Spirit to lead you, even when you see things written about Jesus.
